Hi, my name is Christ Amlai and this is my application to thisiscold

Firstly, I want to be open and say web-design isn't my strongpoint, my previous work is in no way par with the projects undertaken by thisiscold,

I still want to apply, because I believe I hold several unique qualities that other applicants may not hold as well

To give some context,

When I worked for 2 small human-rights charities, my role included web-development/design, but also systems administration and other technical support.

During my time there, I learned the value of performance.

I would obsess over it; because the sites we operated would primarily be viewed in remote regions with the worst connectivity possible. So I had to learn and put in place various web practices to accomodate this, and I also had to go of on my own - when designing backends, managing databases, large image galleries etc.

I didn't want to be blindsided, certain web practices lose browser compatibility, So I always ensured there's a fallback option

I bring this up, because when I'm in regions with poor connectivity, I often find that it's the most beautifully designed websites are the ones lagging behind

That zeal I had towards performance gains, I'd love to carry that over to beautiful web styling, if I was placed in the right environment

To bridge of this, I would like to explain my technical skills a bit.

I'll give two short examples and one longer

A previous org. I worked for wanted a searchbar that doubled as a word/sentence finder, so I decided to put my use of Golang and my awareness of ripgrep, and it was rapidly fast and the commercial options available

One of my colleagues, was nagging the photographer to use legal filenames, I thought it's not appropriate, to tell him don't use spaces in filenamess, I'm fluent in various shell languages, from our photographer, we got hundreds of photos but all with spaces in the filenames, and I did it in a jiffy, compresssed it to .avif and left a jpg as fallback

It's a note-taking site I built, for my friends and I, while it certainly looks bland, I think its unique because of its design, the nested directory sidebar, which shows gradient, the distraction-free element,

In terms of communications, in my previous role I had to liase with many different teams and departments, I had to give realistic turn-arounds and resolution windows, most of my superioers didn't have a technical background, so I had to use simple terms

Very lastly, I thought I'd name these skills, in case it could lend itself to web design

I'm a classically trained artist, in egg-tempura paint, and as a hobby I practice short-film making. So while I certainly don't have a strong portfolio to boast of, I think having these skills and an artistic mind, so to speak, could really be nurtured under your company
